Phil Thompson predicts where Chelsea and Liverpool will finish this season
The former Liverpool captain can't see past Chelsea in the Premier League title race
Phil Thompson is backing Chelsea to win the Premier League title this season, although the retired defender is confident Liverpool will finish in the top four.
The Blues are sitting at the top of the Premier League table and five points ahead of second-placed Liverpool after 20 games in the 2016-17 season so far.
Chelsea lost 2-0 to bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in their last Premier League fixture following goals from Dele Alli either side of half-time.
Liverpool missed the chance to move to within three points of Antonio Conte’s men after Jurgen Klopp’s men twice squandered a lead to draw 2-2 with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Former Liverpool defender Thompson doesn’t envisage Chelsea being caught in the title race ahead of their trip to defending champions Leicester City on Saturday evening.
“At this moment in time it is still difficult to look past Chelsea. My tip was Manchester City but they still look too fragile at the back,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“You look at Chelsea’s squad and they’re worthy favourites, although the Spurs result certainly gave everyone around them in the table a lift. It was the first round of fixtures in a while when we had some slip-ups.”
On Liverpool’s prospects for the 2016-17 season, the Merseyside club’s former captain added:
“I certainly fancy Liverpool to finish in the top four and at this moment I’d put them second in a very close fight for the title,” Thompson said.
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last season.
