Philippe Coutinho makes honest admission about new Liverpool contract
The Liverpool midfielder has revealed the support of the fans was a motivating factor behind his decision to sign a new contract
Philippe Coutinho has revealed that the support of the Liverpool fans gave him the motivation to sign a new contract at Anfield.
The Brazil international put pen to paper on a new long-term deal with the Merseyside outfit on Wednesday morning to end speculation surrounding his future at the 18-time English champions.
Coutinho has reportedly committed his future until 2022 with Liverpool after the South American moved to the Reds in a £8.5m deal from Serie A giants Inter Milan in the 2013 January transfer window.
Liverpool struggled in the absence of Coutinho after the midfielder missed almost two months with an ankle injury before he returned to first-team action earlier this month.
Speaking to Liverpool’s website about his new contract, Coutinho lifted the lid on his reasoning behind signing a new deal with the Merseyside club.
“Ever since my arrival here, I was welcomed with open arms by the supporters – and everyone at this football club,” Coutinho said.
“This is an important factor that carries weight when you decide to remain here for a longer period – and this did have a lot of weight when I thought about the renewal of my contract.
“I can only thank every supporter for their faith in me. I really hope to repay them. I will do my very best on the pitch to create assists for my teammates and score goals for us to try and win trophies and titles.
“It’s not just me – since me and my family arrived here we have been welcomed with open arms by everyone. We feel at home in this city, we feel a part of this city. It is a very important day for me, my wife and my daughter. I am happy – and everyone is happy at home!”
Coutinho has scored five goals and has made five assists in the 2016-17 Premier League season.
The Brazil midfielder is still waiting to win his first trophy at Anfield.
