Rio Ferdinand has taken to social media to send a heartfelt message to Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck after the forward made his long-awaited return from injury against Preston North End in the FA Cup on Saturday.

The England striker made his first appearance of the season for the north London side when he came off the bench in the second half as Arsenal came from a goal down to earn a 2-1 victory at Deepdale and book their place in the fourth round.

Welbeck had been sidelined since the summer after suffering a serious knee injury towards the end of last season but will now be hoping to hold down a regular spot in the Arsenal first team this term.

And Ferdinand had some words of encouragement for the former Manchester United striker as he sent him a personal message on Instagram.
