Toby Alderweireld was thrilled to win Match Of The Day's defender of the year award for 2016

Toby Alderweireld has expressed his delight at winning the Match of the Day defender of the year for 2016 after a brilliant 18 months at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Belgium international has wasted no time establishing himself as a key player under Mauricio Pochettino after he moved to the north London club in an £11.5m deal from La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid in the summer.

Alderweireld helped Spurs challenge for the Premier League title throughout the 2015-16 season before Pochettino’s men faded away in the final weeks of the season as Leicester City were crowned champions.

However, Tottenham did finish with the joint-best defensive record in the 2015-16 Premier League season and the Lilywhites have the meanest defence this term after conceding 14 times in 20 games.

Alderweireld posted the above photo on his Instagram page and wrote the following caption after winning Match Of The Day’s defender of the year:

“Proud to win the MOTD defender of the year 2016. Big thanks to everyone. #COYS”
