France international Anthony Martial extended the home side’s lead with a precise finish in the 15th minute to continue the centre-forward’s recent goal-scoring run after netting four times in his last six appearances.

Marcus Rashford came off the bench to score twice in the final 15 minutes to wrap up Manchester United’s place in the FA Cup fourth round.

Rooney took to his Instagram page to delivers his thoughts on goal number 249 after the Manchester United skipper equalled Charlton’s record.

Rooney wrote: “Great performance from the team today and proud moment personally to equal Sir Bobby’s record. It’s an honour to join him as @manchesterunited’s all-time leading goalscorer 😀”
