Pundit makes bold prediction about Kurt Zouma and Chelsea
Kenny Cunningham is confident that Antonio Conte will start Kurt Zouma at the expense of Gary Cahill or David Luiz
Kenny Cunningham has backed Antonio Conte to draft Kurt Zouma into his Chelsea starting line-up at the expense of Gary Cahill or David Luiz.
The France centre-half made his much-anticipated return to the Chelsea side on Sunday afternoon as he helped the Blues ease to a 4-1 win against Peterborough United despite John Terry’s second-half sending off.
Zouma has missed the best part of 11 months with a serious knee injury which the talented defender suffered during a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the Premier League in February 2016.
Chelsea won 13 successive Premier League games after Conte switched to a back three containing Cesar Azpilicueta, Cahill and Luiz.
However, former Republic of Ireland and Wimbledon defender Cunningham believes Conte will prefer the pace and power of Zouma in his defence following the Frenchman’s return to full fitness.
“Kurt Zouma has come back. He will need to come into the team. I’m not convinced by the strength of that back three. He will come in ahead of Luiz or Cahill,” Cunningham told Newstalk’s Off The Ball podcast.
Chelsea are five points clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table ahead of their trip to defending champions Leicester City on Saturday evening.
