Pundit makes prediction about Virgil van Dijk amid Chelsea link
Former Southampton midfielder Matt Le Tissier delivers an update on Virgil van Dijk's future at St Mary's
Matt Le Tissier believes Virgil van Dijk will stay at Southampton beyond the January transfer window despite the centre-half being linked with a big-money Premier League move.
The Netherlands international helped the south coast club keep a clean sheet on Wednesday night as the Saints eased to a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.
Van Dijk has established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading defenders over the past 18 months or so following his move to Southampton from SPL champions Celtic in 2015.
The Daily Express have reported that Chelsea have launched a £50m bid for the Netherlands defender in the January transfer window as Antonio Conte looks to bolster his options at the back.
Asked following Southampton’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool on Wednesday night whether Van Dijk would leave St Mary’s in the January transfer window, Le Tissier told Sky Sports: “I think so [he will stay this month]. I think when you look back at all the players we have sold, I can’t remember one of them going in January.
“I thought they organised themselves really well. I watched the last round up at the Emirates and they did the same thing there, a terrific defensive performance.”
Chelsea lost 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in their most-recent Premier League fixture but the Blues are still five points clear of Liverpool.
