Pundit offers Chelsea advice on Diego Costa situation in title race
Diego Costa is vital to Chelsea's title bid this season, according to Tony Gayle
Chelsea need to get Diego Costa back on board as soon as possible to stay on course in the Premier League title race, according to Tony Gayle.
Costa was forced to sit out the Premier League leaders’s 3-0 win at Leicester City on Saturday evening due to a supposed back injury.
However, according to reports in the British media, Antonio Conte and Costa had a training ground bust-up ahead of their trip to the King Power Stadium which led to the striker’s omission.
The controversial striker has scored 14 times in 19 appearances in the Premier League this season to help Chelsea ease to a seven-point lead over the closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ on Tuesday morning, former West Ham star Gayle explained why Conte needs to get Costa back on side in the title race.
“Chelsea have a decent lead in the Premier League at the moment. They played Hazard, Willian and Pedro [but that] wouldn’t last a season for me,” Gayle said.
“Diego Costa has been their main force this season. It is important to get this player on board. I don’t think he is saying he isn’t going to play… You wouldn’t want to be messing about with an owner like Roman Abramovich who could probably afford to let him stew in the reserves.”
Costa moved to Chelsea in a £32m deal from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in 2014 after winning the Spanish top-flight title under Diego Simeone.
The Blues won the Premier League crown in Costa’s first season in England after the striker netted 20 times in 26 top-flight games.
