Pundit: Players like Chelsea star are gold dust, Antonio Conte has to keep him
The Chelsea striker is crucial to Antonio Conte's side, says Graeme Souness
Diego Costa is like gold dust and Chelsea need to keep the striker, according to Graeme Souness.
The Spain international scored his 15th goal of the 2016-17 Premier League campaign on Sunday afternoon as Costa helped the west London side to ease to a 2-0 win against Hull City at Stamford Bridge.
The 28-year-old has endured a controversial couple of weeks at Stamford Bridge after the striker was reported to have fallen out with manager Antonio Conte about interest from China.
While the Chelsea boss pointed to a back injury as the reason behind Costa’s absence for their 3-0 win against defending champions Leicester City, the British media claimed that Conte and Costa were involved in a training ground bust-up over a £400,000-a-week offer from China.
Speaking to Sky Sports after Chelsea’s 2-0 win against Hull on Sunday afternoon, ex-midfielder Souness highlighted the importance of Costa to Chelsea.
Asked whether Chelsea should be doing everything possible to keep Costa, Souness replied:
“Oh yes. People like him are gold dust. What he gives you. In that dressing room, there will be lesser lights. There will be people who don’t want to get into confrontation. He is the opposite of that. He is the first one to step up and fancy a bit of a battle today because he is up for it.”
Chelsea are eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
