Pundit states prediction for Hull v Man United

Charlie Nicholas is confident Manchester United will ease past Hull City in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final

Charlie Nicholas is backing Manchester United to edge past Hull City in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final at KCOM Stadium on Thursday night.

The Red Devils were 2-0 winners at Old Trafford despite a valiant performance from the visitors as Jose Mourinho’s side struggled to make the breakthrough until the second half.

Juan Mata opened the scoring with a close-range finish before towering midfielder Marouane Fellaini doubled the home side’s lead with minutes remaining on the clock.

Manchester United are unbeaten in 17 games in all competitions in a run which stretches back to a 2-1 loss to Turkish side Fenerbahce in the Europa League at the end of November.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Manchester United’s return trip to Hull on Thursday night, Nicholas issued his backing for the Red Devils despite the Tigers’s recent improvement under Marco Silva.

“Jose Mourinho’s side deserved at least a draw from Stoke because they did play well. They’ve also got this never-say-die attitude back in their make-up,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“However, I don’t see it being a night where they need it. There’s not enough goals in this Hull side and they’ll need a tremendous amount of luck.

“I think Hull will be caught in two minds as to whether they really go for it or whether they keep it tight and try to do something as the game goes on, and I’m expecting United to pick them off.”
