Pundit: The treatment of this Man United player has been disgraceful

Ian Wright heaps praise on Wayne Rooney for the brilliant career he has enjoyed for both club and country

Ian Wright believes that the treatment of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney in recent months has been “disgraceful”.

The Red Devils skipper has come in for plenty of criticism in recent weeks for failing to find consistent form for both club and country.

Rooney, however, went some way towards silencing his critics on Saturday when he scored the opening goal in the 4-0 win over Reading in the FA Cup at Old Trafford to equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time goal record for Manchester United.

The England captain has been accused of railing to produce consistent performances in recent seasons.

However, Arsenal and England legend Wright believes that Rooney deserves significantly more praise than what he has received of late.

Speaking on BT Sport’s FA Cup Tonight show, Wright said: “When we saw him score that first goal [for Everton] against Arsenal aged 16, if somebody said he would go on to break the record, we would have said that’s an unbelievable career.

“When you listen and hear how people talk about him and treat him, it’s disgraceful.

“He has done magnificently.”
