Pundit: This is what Arsenal players will think about Granit Xhaka
Danny Murphy has a warning for Granit Xhaka about his Arsenal team-mates
Danny Murphy has warned Granit Xhaka that his Arsenal team-mates will start to view him as unreliable unless the midfielder can improve his discipline.
The Switzerland international picked up his second red card of his short Arsenal career so far last weekend after Xhaka was penalised for a two-footed challenge on Steven Defour during the north London side’s 2-1 win against Burnley.
The £33m summer signing was guilty of a sloppy pass and in his eagerness to win the ball back committed an illegal tackle on the Belgium international which led to his dismissal with 30 minutes to go at the Emirates Stadium.
Xhaka’s team-mates were forced to dig deep to secure three points after Burnley equalised in added-time through Andre Grey from the spot before Alexis Sanchez netted an injury-time penalty of his own to secure three points.
Speaking to London Evening Standard about Xhaka’s latest sending off, former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Murphy had a warning for the Swiss defensive midfielder.
“I would give the holding role to Francis Coquelin or Mohamed Elneny and let Xhaka do damage further up the field,” Murphy said.
“The problem for Xhaka is that his team-mates will consider him unreliable. At a big club, that means you don’t play in big games.
“He has had two red cards now this season and after a while, other players become sick to death of that.”
