Pundit: This should encourage Jurgen Klopp to enter January market
John Aldridge uses Luis Suarez as proof that Liverpool could unearth a top signing in the January transfer window
John Aldridge believes that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp can find some hidden gems in the January transfer window, just like Luis Suarez.
The Uruguay international was signed in a £23.75m deal from Eredivisie giants Ajax in January 2011 during Kenny Dalglish’s second spell in charge of the Merseyside outfit.
Suarez went on to score 69 times in 110 games in the Premier League and won the PFA player of the year in 2014 after he fired Liverpool to the cusp of title glory in 2013-14.
Klopp only signed Steven Caulker on a short-term loan during the January transfer window last season and the Liverpool boss has poured cold water on talk of strengthening his squad this month.
However, former Liverpool striker Aldridge believes Klopp could make some shrewd purchases before the transfer window shuts if he draws inspiration from the club’s Suarez deal.
“Will Liverpool buy this month? It will all come down to whether the players Jurgen Klopp wants are available,” Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“It’s not the best time to buy and you can pay over the odds in January but the signing of Luis Suarez in 2011 shows that you can find gems at this time of the year.
“One or two new faces could really help us in the second half of the season. But Klopp isn’t the kind of manager who would just go and spend money for the sake of it. They will have to be the right players for the coming years, not just the next five months.”
Liverpool signed seven players in the summer transfer window after the Reds finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last term.
