Pundit: This Liverpool star challenging Diego Costa for player of the season
Chris Sutton has been impressed with Adam Lallana's performances in the Liverpool side this season
Chris Sutton believes Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana is a worthy contender for PFA player of the season alongside Chelsea striker Diego Costa.
The England midfielder has made a brilliant start to the 2016-17 Premier League season after a return of five goals and two assists in 17 top-flight goals.
Lallana has been in particularly influential in recent weeks after the ex-Southampton captain scored four times in his last six Premier League outings.
The attacking midfielder provided the cross for Georginio Wijnaldum’s winner in a 1-0 win against title rivals Manchester City at Anfield on New Year’s Eve.
Lallana is still some way short of Costa’s tally of 14 goals in 17 games as Chelsea extended their winning run to 13 games against Stoke City on Saturday.
Speaking on BBC Radio’s 606 podcast, Sutton delivered his verdict on Lallana’s performances in the current campaign.
“Adam Lallana has arguably been the player of the season. Diego Costa has been terrific for Chelsea,” Sutton said.
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last season after Klopp was appointed as Brendan Rodgers’s successor back in October 2015.
