Pundit: Tottenham midfielder could emulate Gareth Bale at Real Madrid
Stan Collymore is convinced Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli can become one of the biggest stars in European football
Stan Collymore believes Dele Alli has a similar mindset to Gareth Bale and the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder could become one of Europe’s best players.
The England midfielder proved to be the difference between Tottenham and Chelsea on Wednesday night after the 20-year-old scored either side of half-time in a 2-0 win against the Premier League leaders at White Hart Lane.
Alli has now scored five times in his last three top-flight appearances to help Mauricio Pochettino’s side hoist themselves up to third place in the Premier League table and seven points behind leaders Chelsea.
The former MK Dons playmaker has already scored 10 goals in the current Premier League campaign to match his tally from his first season in the English top flight after a £5m move from the League One side in 2015.
Writing in his Daily Mirror column, Collymore discussed how far Alli could go after the Tottenham midfielder’s prolific run of form in Pochettino’s side in recent months.
“I can’t see any reason why he can’t have the same impact on Europe as Bale has had,” Collymore said.
“Yes, they are different players – Bale is the heir apparent to Cristiano Ronaldo.
“But Alli could prove – and this is really important – to be bracketed alongside those mercurial midfielders who come from across the Continent, such as Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Eden Hazard, David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne.
“We don’t have one that leaps off the top of our heads… yet Alli could be him.
“He’s in that kind of company. Massively.”
