Pundit: Why I’d take Chelsea’s Willian over this Man United midfielder
Kevin Kilbane admits he wouldn't be fazed by the prospect of facing Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata
Kevin Kilbane says he would take Chelsea forward Willian over Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata.
The Brazil international scored in the second half of Chelsea’s 4-1 win against Peterborough in the FA Cup third round at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
Mata, meanwhile, got on the score sheet in Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Hull City in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final at Old Trafford.
Willian has failed to hit his lofty heights from the 2015-16 season but the South American has still managed five goals and one assist in 16 Premier League games.
His Manchester United rival Mata has netted four times and has made two assists in 15 top-flight appearances in the current campaign despite initial concerns about the midfielder’s future under Jose Mourinho.
Speaking on Irish radio station Newstalk during Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Hull on Tuesday night, former Everton defender Kilbane explained why he would take Willian over Mata.
“I’d take Willian. Watching him play, he does things I’d never dream of doing on the football pitch but I’d fancy playing against him. He wouldn’t scare me,” Kilbane said.
“I’d fancy being able to run away from him. Yet, he has got the touch where he gets himself in position and he can play in tight positions.”
Chelsea are 10 points clear of sixth-placed Manchester United at the top of the table.
