Pundit: Why Liverpool should be applauded in top-four race
Pat Nevin believes Liverpool deserve praise for punching above their weight in the top-four race
Liverpool deserve to be applauded for punching above their weight in the top-four race, according to Pat Nevin.
The Merseyside outfit dropped to fourth place in the Premier League table on Saturday afternoon following a 3-2 loss to Premier League strugglers Swansea City at Anfield.
Liverpool have failed to win their last three games in the Premier League to undermine their title challenge and leave the 18-time English champions facing a tough battle to secure a top-four spot.
Jurgen Klopp’s men are 10 points behind current leaders Chelsea ahead of their home clash against the Premier League pace-setters in their next top-flight game on Tuesday.
Speaking to Irish radio station Newstalk’s Off The Ball show, Nevin spoke of his admiration for the Merseyside club despite their disappointing form in recent weeks.
“The thing I do underline all the time is Liverpool are punching above their weight all the time anyway,” Nevin said.
“Where they are in the league, I would do nothing other than applaud them because he’s got everything he possibly can out of that small group.”
Liverpool finished in eighth place under Klopp last season after the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager was appointed as Brendan Rodgers’s successor back in October 2015.
The Merseyside outfit haven’t won the Premier League title.
