Ray Wilkins: Chelsea need this player to win the title

The former Chelsea man doesn't believe Antonio Conte can win the Premier League title without Diego Costa

Chelsea need Diego Costa to the Premier League title this season, says Ray Wilkins.

The Chelsea striker is currently sidelined with a back problem which forced him to sit out the Premier League leaders’s 3-0 win at Leicester City on Saturday evening.

However, according to reports in the British media, Antonio Conte and Costa had a training ground bust-up ahead of their trip to the King Power Stadium which led to the striker’s omission.

The former Atletico Madrid striker has scored 14 times in 19 appearances in the Premier League this season to help Chelsea soar clear of their closest rivals in the title race.

Indeed, Costa has scored almost 33 per cent of Chelsea’s goals in the current Premier League campaign which highlights the centre-forward’s importance to the west London side.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ on Monday afternoon, Wilkins explained why Chelsea can ill-afford to lose their star man.

“If they’re going to win the league, they’re going to need this guy. He has been in fantastic form,” Wilkins said.

“Last year, the guy was almost a disgrace. This year, he has just been superb. He causes havoc to everybody. If it’s financial and he wants to move to China, I don’t quite understand. If he goes at 28, he’s basically saying his career is finished.”
