Robbie Keane gives his verdict on Diego Costa’s situation at Chelsea
The Irish striker offers Diego Costa some advice on his Chelsea future
Robbie Keane has joked that he would walk to China if the Irish striker was offered £400,000 a week when discussing Diego Costa’s ongoing situation at Chelsea.
Chinese club Tianjin Quanjian are reported to have made an approach for the Spain international earlier this month with a staggering contract proposal for the centre-forward.
Costa missed the west London side’s 3-0 win at defending champions Leicester City due to a back injury, although reports suggested that the Chelsea striker had fallen out with manager Antonio Conte over interest from China.
The 28-year-old has scored 14 times in 19 games in the 2016-17 Premier League season so far to help the Blues established themselves as favourites to win the title.
Speaking to talkSPORT about Costa’s future at Chelsea, Keane says the Chelsea man has to decide whether he is willing to give up the chance to win a second Premier League title to earn an astronomical wage in China.
“If they gave me the money Diego Costa was offered, I’d walk there now!” said Keane.
He added: “The Chinese league is nowhere close to the level of the Premier League, and Costa is scoring goals on a regular basis in the Premier League.
“If he can do that here there’s no question he would score a bag full of goals over there. He just has to ask himself, ‘do I really want to leave this year?’
“He’s got a great chance of winning another league title with Chelsea, and every player wants to win, so does that mean he’ll just wait until the end of the year?
“Listen, it’s very hard for the player if you’re getting offered £400,000 a week. It’s absolutely ludicrous, so what does he do?
“You have to weigh it all up, you have to think about your family and see what the best is for them too.
“The money he’s getting offered is just crazy, he’s probably thinking he could go there for one year, make a lot of money, and come back to the Premier League or go somewhere else.”
Costa moved to Chelsea in a £32m deal from Atletico Madrid in 2014.
