Ian Wright states prediction for Southampton v Arsenal in FA Cup fourth round
The former Arsenal striker reckons Southampton could take their eye off the ball after reaching the EFL Cup final
Ian Wright believes Arsenal can capitalise on a potentially distracted Southampton side in the FA Cup fourth round at St Mary’s on Saturday evening.
The Saints booked their place in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on Wednesday night thanks to a 2-0 aggregate win against Premier League giants Liverpool.
Shane Long scored an added-time winner to seal a 1-0 win against Jurgen Klopp’s side and secure their place in the EFL Cup showpiece at Wembley.
Arsenal left it late to beat promoted side Burnley last weekend after Alexis Sanchez’s controversial penalty secured a 2-1 win in north London.
The Gunners will be hoping to win the FA Cup for the third time in four seasons this year as their title bid looks in doubt with an eight-point gap between Chelsea and Arsenal.
Speaking to The Sun Goals podcast, Wright explained why he is confident that Wenger’s side will ease past the EFL Cup finalists in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday evening.
“You’re not expecting an Arsenal defeat because of the team he can put out. I think Arsenal will put a strong team out,” Wright said.
“It’ll be strong if Sanchez is in it because he doesn’t want to not play. Arsenal were top of the league and put out a strong team and lost 4-0 to Southampton last season.
“You can’t call what Arsenal are going to do. Hopefully with Southampton and the buzz on they’re on at the minute, they’ll take their eye off the ball and Arsenal can ease past them. If they do slip up in any way, Arsenal will punish them.”
