Charlie Nicholas is backing Adam Lallana to fire Liverpool to victory over his former employers Southampton in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.

The Merseyside outfit played out a disappointing goalless draw with League Two side Plymouth in the FA Cup third round at Anfield on Sunday afternoon after Jurgen Klopp fielded one of the youngest-ever Liverpool sides.

Southampton, meanwhile, squandered a 1-0 lead to draw 1-1 with Championship side Norwich City which means both the Saints and Liverpool are facing third-round replays later this month.

The 18-time English champions were held to a frustrating goalless draw with the Saints when the pair met in the Premier League at St Mary’s earlier this month.

Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas felt Liverpool deserved to win that league encounter and he is backing the Reds to ease to a 2-1 win against Southampton in their League Cup clash with help from Adam Lallana in the first leg.

“The question about Southampton is are they going to go for it? I could see them sit in, play on the counter-attack and treat it like an away game,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“I think they’ve been getting a bit bland under Claude Puel and you do wonder where the goals are going to come from.

“I covered the league game when it ended 0-0 and Liverpool should have won three or four nil, so they have no reason to change anything from the league game and expect they’ll get a better outcome.

“Jurgen Klopp seems to be getting twitchy and made too many changes in the FA Cup for me, but I do expect them to win here and, with the form he’s in, I fancy Adam Lallana to come back and haunt Southampton.”
