Steve McManaman opens up about Wayne Rooney at Man United

Steve McManaman lavishes praise on Wayne Rooney after his sparkling career with Manchester United

Steve McManaman has claimed that Wayne Rooney does not get the credit he deserves for his brilliant career with England and Manchester United.

The 31-year-old hit the headlines on Saturday when he scored the opener in the FA Cup clash against Reading to move level with Sir Bobby Charlton as Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer.

Rooney has struggled for form and fitness this season and has come in for plenty of criticism for failing to produce consistent performances for both club and country this term.

However, Liverpool legend McManaman feels that Rooney’s sparkling career should be celebrated instead of criticised.

Speaking on the BT Sport FA Cup Tonight show on Saturday, McManaman said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to bits for him.

“He was born in Liverpool so that means a lot to me. I’m thrilled that someone from Liverpool has done incredibly well and I think we should embrace it.

“The fact that he’s broken the England record as well, that’s a phenomenal achievement, and he’s still going strong. Fair play to him.”

Rooney will be hoping to break the scoring record for Manchester United when the Red Devils host Hull City in the first round of their EFL Cup semi-final clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, before their crunch clash with Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.
