Steve McManaman reacts to Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Plymouth in the FA Cup
The former Liverpool midfielder wasn't impressed with the lack of quality during the FA Cup third-round clash at Anfield
Steve McManaman was critical of Liverpool’s lack of quality in front of goal after their goalless draw with Plymouth in the FA Cup third round on Sunday afternoon.
The Merseyside outfit fielded their youngest side since 1965 when Bill Shankly picked a youthful Liverpool side to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineaux.
Jurgen Klopp turned to Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana in search of a winner after his youngsters failed to make the breakthrough against the League Two side.
But the Liverpool trio couldn’t unlock the Plymouth defence much to frustration of McManaman as the former Reds captain was critical of Klopp’s players.
“It hasn’t been a good game at all in terms of quality. It has been very one-sided but there has been a real lack of quality, certainly from Liverpool,” McManaman told BT Sport.
Liverpool will have two days to dust themselves down before the 18-time English champions make the long journey to Southampton in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.
The Merseyside outfit are in second place in the Premier League table and five points adrift of current leaders Chelsea ahead of their next top-flight fixture at Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.
Liverpool lost to Manchester City and Sevilla in the League Cup and Europa League final under Klopp last season after the German was appointed as Brendan Rodgers’s successor back in October 2015.
