Steven Gerrard offers advice to Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool need to make this signing in January
The former Liverpool captain wants Jurgen Klopp to sign a defensive midfielder as cover for Jordan Henderson
Steven Gerreard believes Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp needs to sign cover for Jordan Henderson in the January transfer window.
The Reds captain was forced off in the second half of Liverpool’s 1-0 win against title rivals Manchester City on New Year’s Eve after the midfielder suffered a heel injury.
Henderson has been ever-present in Klopp’s side this season after starting all 19 of their Premier League games in 2016-17 campaign following his switch to a defensive midfielder.
Divock Origi replaced Henderson in the second half at Anfield with midfielder Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum already on the pitch.
Speaking on BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show, Gerrard urged Klopp to sign cover for Henderson in the January transfer window.
“Definitely a back-up for Jordan Henderson as a holding midfielder and another choice at centre-half,” Gerrard said when asked who Liverpool should sign this mont.
Liverpool are in second place in the Premier League table and six points behind current leaders Chelsea.
Wijnaldum scored a first-half winner in Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Manchester City on New Year’s Eve.
The Reds will make the trip to Sunderland in their next top-flight fixture on Monday afternoon.
