Steven Gerrard reacts to Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Wolves in FA Cup
The former Liverpool captain has his say on the Reds's shock 2-1 defeat by Wolves in the FA Cup fourth round
Steven Gerrard felt that Jurgen Klopp was protected his players his post-match media interview after Liverpool lost 2-1 to Wolves in the FA Cup on Saturday.
Liverpool started the FA Cup fourth-round clash in desperate need of a victory after notching up just one win in their last seven outings ahead of the visit of Wolves.
However, the visitors capitalised on Liverpool’s lack of confidence through Richard Stearman who broke the deadlock inside the first minute at Anfield.
Former Aston Villa midfielder Andreas Weimann doubled the away side’s lead with a superb solo goal before half-time to leave Liverpool contemplating a third successive defeat in all competitions.
Jurgen Klopp brought on Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge and Emre Can in the second half in search of an unlikely comeback as Liverpool continued to flounder in front of goal.
Divock Origi managed to halve the deficit with five minutes remaining but Wolves clung on to secure a famous win at Anfield and leave Liverpool without a win in five games ahead of the visit of Manchester United.
Speaking to BT Sport, ex-Liverpool captain Gerrard said:
“I think he is protecting them by taking responsibility. Me and Paul [Ince] have both been players and the players have to regroup – and do so quickly.”
