Steven Gerrard tells Liverpool to make defender first January signing
The former Liverpool captain wants Jurgen Klopp to sign Virgil van Dijk
Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool should sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in the January transfer window.
Liverpool lost 3-2 to Swansea City at Anfield on Saturday afternoon after Iceland midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson scored a 74th-minute winner to leave the Merseyside outfit’s title hopes in doubt.
The Reds have conceded 27 times in 22 games in the 2016-17 Premier League season so far amid increasing criticism of Jurgen Klopp’s defence.
Van Dijk has established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading defenders over the past season or so at St Mary’s following his move to the south coast club from SPL outfit Celtic in 2015.
Speaking to BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show, Gerrard singled out Van Dijk as his ideal target for Liverpool in the January transfer window.
“I would go and try and bid on Virgil van Dijk from Southampton but we’ve had enough of their players so that would probably go down like a lead balloon,” Gerrard said.
Liverpool will host Premier League leaders Chelsea in their next Premier League game at Anfield on Tuesday 31 January.
The Reds will take on Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the cup competitions before the visit of Chelsea in the league.
