Steven Gerrard: This is what Jurgen Klopp will be thinking about January Liverpool signings
The ex-Liverpool captain believes Jurgen Klopp will be sceptical about his ability to sign players that will really improve his squad in January
Steven Gerrard believes Jurgen Klopp will be unsure whether Liverpool can find players in the January transfer window that will significantly improve his squad.
The German head coach hasn’t recruited any new players in the current transfer window despite concerns about the size of Liverpool’s squad heading into the final 16 games of the 2016-17 season.
Liverpool are currently without Sadio Mane as the winger continues to represent Senegal on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Philippe Coutinho and Joel Matip have returned from their respective injury problems in recent weeks to give Klopp’s side a much-needed boost.
However, the consensus amongst ex-professionals appears to be that Klopp needs to add greater depth to his squad for Liverpool to challenge this term.
Speaking to BT Sport about Klopp’s lack of January transfer signings, the club’s former captain Gerrard attempted to explain the Liverpool manager’s thinking in the current window.
“Jurgen Klopp is probably thinking that he doesn’t want to waste his money in January if the right people aren’t there,” Gerrard said.
Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table and nine points behind leaders Chelsea.
