Steven Gerrard: This is why I’m confident Jurgen Klopp can steer Liverpool through blip

The ex-Liverpool captain issues his backing for Jurgen Klopp amid current dip in performances

Steven Gerrard is confident that Jurgen Klopp has the quality in his Liverpool squad to get through their current blip.

The Merseyside outfit crashed out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night after the 18-time English champions lost 1-0 to Southampton in the second leg of their last-four clash at Anfield.

Liverpool have only managed to win one of their seven games in 2017 so far after a 1-0 victory over League Two side Plymouth Argyle in their FA Cup third-round replay at Home Park.

The Reds have dropped down to fourth place in the Premier League table after a 3-2 loss to Swansea City at Anfield last weekend to leave Klopp’s side 10 points behind leaders Chelsea.

Speaking to BBC Sport about Liverpool’s current form in all competitions, Gerrard issued his backing for Klopp ahead of their home clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday afternoon.

“I hope it’s just a blip,” said Gerrard.

“I’ve experienced it myself and blips are difficult to play your way out of, but I believe we’ve got the talent and personnel to do it.

“We’ve been one of the most exciting teams to watch [during Klopp’s time in charge].

“There’s a bit of a sticky patch the past three or four weeks – but I’m absolutely delighted he’s our manager.”

Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last season under Klopp following his appointment in October 2015.
