Steve McManaman offers Liverpool advice: This isn’t working
The former Liverpool midfielder hasn't been impressed with Jurgen Klopp's defence in recent weeks
Steve McManaman says Jurgen Klopp needs to accept that his defensive additions haven’t proven successful after Liverpool lost 3-2 to Swansea City on Saturday afternoon.
The Liverpool manager signed Loris Karius in a £4.7m deal from Bundesliga side Mainz in the summer transfer window in an attempt to bolster his goalkeeping options.
However, the 23-year-old was relegated to second choice earlier this campaign after a series of erratic performances in the Liverpool team.
Klopp also brought in Estonia international Ragnar Klavan in a £5m deal from German outfit Augsburg but the 31-year-old has found life in the Premier League difficult despite an encouraging display against Manchester City.
The summer signing struggled during Liverpool’s 3-2 loss to relegation-threatened Swansea on Saturday afternoon.
Speaking to BT Sport after Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat, McManaman admitted that Klopp has struggled to get his defence right despite his summer additions.
“I think he has got question marks over his defence and he has tried to bring in player. He has brought in Matip, Klavan and a goalkeeper in and it hasn’t been working yet. Sometimes that happens,” McManaman said.
Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table and eight points adrift of current leaders Chelsea with 16 games to play.
