Paul Merson states blunt prediction for Sunderland v Tottenham
The former Arsenal midfielder doesn't expect Tottenham to have any trouble dispatching Sunderland on Tuesday night
Paul Merson is backing Tottenham Hotspur to make light work of Sunderland when Spurs make the long to the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night.
The north London side are one of the Premier League’s form sides after a seven-game unbeaten run that stretches back to a 1-0 loss to top-four rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford in early December.
The Lilywhite have won six of their last seven games which makes ominous reading for Sunderland manager David Moyes as the Black Cats look to climb out of the relegation zone following a disappointing season so far.
Tottenham were 1-0 winners against Sunderland in the reverse fixture in September when Harry Kane scored the decisive strike before the England international picked up a serious ankle problem.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Tuesday night’s Premier League action, former Arsenal midfielder Merson issued his backing for Tottenham to beat Sunderland in a straightforward win.
“What is going on at Sunderland? Patrick van Aanholt has been allowed to leave the club while Papy Djilobodji is out injured, leaving them short ahead of this game. Yes, Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo looks as though they’re heading to Wearside, but whether they will feature against Spurs remains to seen,” Merson said.
“t’s not the best preparation ahead of free-flowing Tottenham’s trip to the Stadium of Light. I can only see one winner.”
Tottenham are in third place in the Premier League table.
