Thibaut Courtois issues backing for ‘committed’ Chelsea player
The Chelsea goalkeeper hails committed Diego Costa after the controversy surrounding the forward
Thibaut Courtois has insisted that Diego Costa is 100 per cent committed to Premier League leaders Chelsea.
The Spain international missed the west London side’s 3-0 win against defending champions Leicester City at the King Power Stadium last weekend due to a back injury.
According to reports in the British media earlier this month, Costa had fallen out with Chelsea manager Antonio Conte over interest from China in the January transfer window.
The 28-year-old centre-forward has scored 15 times in 20 games in the 2016-17 Premier League season so far to help the five-time champions move clear of their closest rivals.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Chelsea’s home clash against Hull City on Sunday afternoon, Courtois leaped to the defence of his team-mate amid ongoing speculation surrounding Costa.
“He looks very committed, we cannot doubt that about Diego. You can see that in all games he plays,” Courtois said.
“Nobody in this team doubted it, so when the day before the game against Leicester that came out it was a bit of a surprise to the players but it didn’t affect us in any way because we know what’s the truth. The rest is maybe just trying to destabilise Chelsea, but we don’t let it.”
Chelsea finished in tenth place in the Premier League table last season after a disappointing defence of their top-flight crown.
Courtois and Costa won the 2014-15 Premier League title in their first campaign at the west London club.
