Thierry Henry admits he is desperate for Arsenal star to do this
Thierry Henry wants to see Mesut Ozil commit his future to Arsenal beyond the summer of 2018
Thierry Henry has admitted that he is desperate to see Mesut Ozil commit his future to Arsenal by signing a new contract with the north London club.
Ozil’s future has been a relentless source of speculation in recent weeks after both he and Alexis Sanchez entered into the final two years of their contracts at The Emirates.
Ozil’s current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2018 and the World Cup winner is believed to be in talks with the Gunners about the possibility of extending his contract at The Emirates.
It has been suggested that Ozil is waiting to see whether Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger extends his stay at The Emirates beyond this summer.
However, former Arsenal star Henry wants to see Ozil commit himself to a new contract at The Emirates.
Writing in his column for The Sun, Henry said: “He has said he wants to know if Arsene is staying beyond the summer. Look, I’m an Arsenal fan. For that reason I’m desperate for him to stay.
“But I understand his predicament. I was in the same situation in 2007 when I joined Barcelona — with a heavy heart. I didn’t know Arsene’s plans, either, as he was coming to the end of a contract then, too.
“People will say it’s all about money for Mesut and that Wenger’s contract is a smokescreen. We don’t know. We have to trust what he says. Respect it.
“Mesut has won the World Cup with Germany. But at club level, he has only one title, with Real Madrid in 2012. He will be desperate for more.
“But he can do that at the Emirates.
“That’s why I’d urge him to stay and become an Arsenal legend.
“Win that first title. Be the future of Arsenal. Not just the assist man, but the guy who drives the team forward. He can do that with Alexis Sanchez.”
Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.
