Thierry Henry replies when asked if Arsenal should sign Premier League star

Thierry Henry does not feel Arsenal should make a bid to try and sign Dimitri Payet from West Ham...

Thierry Henry has told Arsenal not to bother making a transfer bid to try and sign Dimitri Payet, and instead insisted that Alex Iwobi has the potential to become a future start for the Gunners.

Payet’s future at West Ham has been a relentless source of speculation in recent days after it emerged that he wants to leave the east London club.

Arsenal have been touted as a possible destination for Payet, although Arsene Wenger last week ruled out a bid from the Gunners for the Frenchman.

And Henry feels that Arsenal are not in need of a player like Payet, instead pointing to young midfielder Iwobi as one of the north London side’s most promising talents.

Asked if Arsenal should try and sign Payet, Henry told Sky Sports: “I don’t think Arsenal need a player like Payet at the moment.

“They have Iwobi, who could be like Payet in a few years’ time, he has been good for Arsenal playing through the middle.

“Iwobi needs games to fulfil his potential and signing a player like Payet could limit his playing time, and it could spell doom for his development.”
