Ander Herrera sends optimistic message to Man United fans ahead of FA Cup clash
The Manchester United midfielder explains why the FA Cup is so important to the Spanish midfielder
Ander Herrera says he is very optimistic Manchester United can retain the FA Cup this season ahead of their fifth-round clash at Blackburn Rovers on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils were 3-0 winners against Saint-Etienne after Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a hat-trick in the first leg of the Europa League last 32 at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
Manchester United won their first trophy in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era at Wembley last season after a 2-1 extra-time win against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final in May.
Herrera was part of the triumphant Red Devils side as the Spain international won his first piece of silverware since moving to Manchester United in a £29m deal from Athletic Bilbao in 2014.
Speaking to Manchester United’s website ahead of Sunday’s trip to Blackburn Rovers in the fifth round, Herrera explained why the FA Cup means so much to the Spanish playmaker.
“It’s a massive competition. When some teams rotate players, that doesn’t mean they don’t give importance to the FA Cup,” Herrera said.
“It’s the oldest competition in England and I think it’s the most amazing cup in the world because of the organisation. For me, the organisation in England is fantastic. The last four play the semi-final one game and then the final at Wembley too and it’s fantastic for the fans.
“Every club wants to win the FA Cup, teams not in the top six even more as they can get in the Europa League [through winning it]. So it’s a fantastic competition to play in. We want to keep playing in it and win away against Blackburn.
“We have very good memories from last season and I’m very optimistic because we have a very good squad.”
Manchester United are in sixth place in the Premier League table in their first season under Jose Mourinho.
