Andy Townsend delivers best verdict on Diego Costa after Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Wolves
The former Chelsea defender is full of praise for Diego Costa after his FA Cup goal
Andy Townsend hailed Diego Costa as the best striker in the Premier League after the Spanish star scored in Chelsea’s 2-0 win at Wolves in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday evening.
Chelsea were left frustrated at half-time after Antonio Conte’s side failed to make the breakthrough despite the Italian naming a full-strength side for the trip to Molineaux.
Pedro Rodriguez finally made the breakthrough in the 64th minute after the Spain international combined with Willian to end Wolves’s resilience in front of their home supporters.
Costa polished off a comfortable win with an 87th-minute effort to secure Chelsea’s place in the FA Cup quarter-final draw in their first season under Conte.
The former Atletico Madrid striker has now scored 16 goals in 26 games in all competitions for the west London outfit this term.
Former Chelsea defender Townsend lavished praise on Costa after his first FA Cup goal of the 2016-17 season.
“There is the best striker in the Premier League at the moment. Diego Costa is so important to this Chelsea team,” Townsend told BBC Sport.
“You do not question Costa’s workrate. He is running everywhere but he has the knack of being in the right place at the right time.
“The way he dispatched it was clinical, worthy of a top, top striker.”
Chelsea are eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
