Anthony Martial explains reasons behind his disappointing Man United performances

The Manchester United striker attempts to explain his poor form under Jose Mourinho

Anthony Martial has appeared to blame a lack of playing time for his disappointing form in a Manchester United shirt this season.

The France international scored 11 times in 49 games in all competitions last term after the forward was signed in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco in the 2015 summer transfer window.

Louis van Gaal didn’t hesistate to place his faith in the French forward despite arriving in the Premier League as an unknown quantity at 19.

However, Mourinho has used the Euro 2016 star sparingly since taking over the reins from Van Gaal which even led to speculation that Martial could leave in the January transfer window.

Martial has only managed to score three goals in 14 Premier League appearances in the current campaign and has been criticised for his lack of consistency.

Speaking at his pre-match media conference ahead of Manchester United’s clash against Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne in the second leg of their Europa League last-32 clash, Martial was asked about his poor form.

“It is just because last year I played a lot, I had the possibility to play back-to-back games. Now I enjoy playing and we have to wait.”
