Eric Bailly admits this surprised him at Man United

Eric Bailly admits that he has been surprised by how quickly he broke into the first team at Manchester United this season

Eric Bailly has admitted that he was surprised to get so much regular playing time during his first season at Manchester United.

The Ivorian defender joined the Red Devils from Villarreal in the summer transfer window as Jose Mourinho’s first signing and has been a regular fixture in the heart of Manchester United’s rearguard.

Bailly missed a large portion of the season due to a knee injury but is now back fit for the Red Devils.

The 22-year-old has made 14 Premier League appearances for Manchester United this season and will be hoping to feature when the Red Devils take on Saint-Etienne in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 clash on Thursday night.

And the Ivory Coast international admits that it was something of a surprise to get so much regular playing time this season.

Speaking at a news conference at Carrington on Wednesday afternoon, Bailly said: “I suppose one surprise was getting into the team so quickly.

“But what I’ve had from day one and what I’m really grateful for is the excellent work of the backroom staff, the coaches and the fitness coaches, and I’ve enjoyed the confidence and the backing of the manager as well.

“Those are the factors that have really helped me settle in.”
