Ex-defender reacts to Kurt Zouma’s display in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Wolves
The former Chelsea defender delivers his verdict on Kurt Zouma's performance at Wolves
Andy Townsend was critical of Kurt Zouma’s performance on the right side of Chelsea’s back three during their 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday evening.
The France defender was handed a rare starting spot for their trip to Wolves in the FA Cup as Zouma looks to build confidence and form after his return from injury earlier this year.
Zouma, who has started both of the west London side’s FA Cup games so far this term, partnered Nathan Ake and John Terry in Antonio Conte’s defence.
However, former Chelsea and Republic of Ireland defender Townsend wasn’t overly impressed with Zouma’s performance against the Championship side in the FA Cup.
“Zouma is not the most comfortable on the right side of the three defenders,” Townsend told BBC Sport.
“He is better when he is up against someone dealing with them and marking them.”
Zouma missed almost 12 months due to a serious knee injury that he suffered during a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the Premier League in February 2016.
Chelsea are eight points clear of second-placed Manchester City in the title race with 13 games to play in the current campaign.
