Gary Neville: This will be Chelsea’s biggest problem if they win the title

Gary Neville delivers his verdict on Chelsea this season and what could happen if they win the title

Gary Neville says that the mentality of the Chelsea players will be the key to success if the Blues are to enjoy a long spell of dominance in English football.

The Blues are currently the heavy favourites to win the Premier League title this season after building an eight-point lead at the top of the table.

Chelsea’s remarkable upturn in form this season has been in stark contrast to their struggles last term, when they ended up 10th and without a trophy.

It remains to be seen whether the west London side will be able to continue their dominance and win the title this season.

However, former Manchester United defender Neville has questioned whether Chelsea’s players will have the hunger to go on and win more titles if they do triumph this term.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Neville said: “I don’t think it’s a case of whether or not the training programme is sustainable.

“It’s more whether if the players have the mentality to win the league if they do and come back and have the right attitude to do it again.

“That’s been the problem for Chelsea over the past few years when they have done quite well and some of those players have been through that story when Carlo Ancelotti or Mourinho were in charge and they haven’t been able to raise the game the following season.

“If they keep the same attitude and application, it’s not down to the training programme. If it doesn’t go well, the managers gets sacked.

“It wasn’t Mourinho who changed or Claudio [Ranieri] this season, but the players’ attitude and mentality that changed.”
