Glenn Hoddle: Cesc Fabregas is like NFL quarterback, Chelsea need him
Former Chelsea boss singles out Cesc Fabregas for special praise
Glenn Hoddle has claimed that Chelsea are a better side when Cesc Fabregas is playing after the midfielder helped the Premier League leaders book their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Fabregas has only started five games in the 2016-17 Premier League campaign after falling out-of-favour under Antonio Conte this season following the Italian’s appointment as manager.
Indeed, summer signing N’Golo Kante and Serbia international Nemanja Matic have been Conte’s first-choice midfield partnership throughout most of the 2016-17 season so far.
However, Fabregas has started all three of Chelsea’s FA Cup games as the west London side continue their march to the Wembley final in search of a domestic double.
Speaking to BT Sport about Fabregas after the midfielder’s influential performance at Wolves in the FA Cup on Saturday evening, Hoddle likened the Spanish star to a NFL quarterback.
“He’s a wonderful footballer,” Hoddle said.
“I think it’s down to him [whether he stays]. Can he sit on the bench?
“When you look at his passes, he finds [Diego] Costa almost with his eyes shut.
“He’s like a quarterback in the NFL. That’s what he gives you.
“He actually elevates them offensively. I think they’re a better team football-wise with Fabregas in the team.”
Chelsea are eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
The Blues haven’t won the FA Cup since 2012.
