Insider’s response when asked if Liverpool are chasing Barcelona midfielder
Guillem Balague plays down the chances of Ivan Rakitic swapping Barcelona for Liverpool
Guillem Balague has played down the significance of Liverpool owner John W Henry sitting in the stands for Barcelona’s 2-1 victory over Leganes on Sunday.
The American businessman was spotted at Camp Nou at the weekend which triggered talk of the Merseyside outfit making a move for a Barcelona player.
Ivan Rakitic was linked with a potential move to the 18-time English champions in the January transfer window although a transfer failed to materialise.
The Croatia international has scored three goals and has made one assist in 18 games in all competitions in the 2016-17 season so far.
Asked whether Henry’s attendance could signal an imminent bid from Liverpool for the Barcelona playmaker, Balague told Sky Sports News HQ:
“Do you really believe that the owner of Liverpool, especially given the way they are structured, is going to go to the Camp Nou just to spy or scout on a player? I think it is important to know how clubs work and that is definitely not the way that Liverpool work.”
Liverpool signed seven players in the 2016 summer transfer window as Jurgen Klopp looked to transform his squad after an eighth-place finish in the 2015-16 season.
The Reds are in fifth place in the Premier League table and 10 points behind current leaders Chelsea.
