Jamie Carragher questions Arsene Wenger about Arsenal signings
The former Liverpool defender raises questions over Arsene Wenger's signings for Arsenal in recent years
Jamie Carragher has questioned the profile of player that Arsene Wenger has signed in recent seasons at Arsenal.
The Gunners boss is facing increased pressure surrounding his long-term future at the north London club after Arsenal suffered a 5-1 loss to Bundesliga outfit Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash on Wednesday night.
Arsenal are 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea in the Premier League title race as Wenger’s side face the prospect of another season without winning the Premier League or the Champions League.
Wenger signed Granit Xhaka in a £33m deal from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach before the Gunners brought in Shkodran Mustafi in a £35m deal from La Liga outfit Valencia in the summer transfer window.
Writing in his Daily Mail column ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures in the FA Cup, Carragher examined Wenger’s signings over the past few years.
“You have to question Wenger for the character of his squad. They are in a comfort zone, which stems from the fact Wenger lacks the ruthlessness of Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho to send shockwaves through the dressing room.
“The profile of player he targets now is a mystery to me, considering the template of the team he had from 1998 to 2004; he used to buy players with power and pace to accompany technique but now it seems as if he favours technique over everything, from physical strength to character.”
Arsenal signed five players in the summer transfer window after a second-place finish last term.
