The Armenia international has earned plenty of praise for his performances for the Red Devils in recent weeks after initially struggling to adapt to life at Old Trafford.
Mkhitaryan continued his solid form for Manchester United on Sunday when he produced a man of the match display to send the Red Devils on their way to a 3-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League.
The playmaker seems to have adapted to the rigours of the Premier League and looks ready to help inspire Manchester United to a top-four finish in the top flight.
Carragher is a keen admirer of the playmaker and revealed that Mkhitaryan came close to joining Liverpool before his eventual transfer to Borussia Dortmund.
Speaking on Sky Sports on Sunday, Carragher said: “He was a player who nearly came to Liverpool, probably three or four years ago under Brendan Rodgers.
“I remember speaking to Brendan Rodgers at the time and he wanted to fill that No 10 position behind Luis Suarez.
“He went to Dortmund in the end and that’s where he played there.
“I think that’s always been his favourite position – you’re more involved.”
Manchester United are currently sixth in the Premier League table.
