Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool could still do with a new goalkeeper despite admitting that Simon Mignolet has acquitted himself well in the 2016-17 season.

The Belgium international started the season as Liverpool’s second-choice goalkeeper after Jurgen Klopp signed Loris Karius in a £4.7m deal from Bundesliga outfit Mainz 05 in the summer transfer window.

However, the German shot stopper has struggled to impress in the Liverpool first-team and Klopp eventually opted to bring Mignolet back into his starting line-up in early December.

The 28-year-old has generally done well since reclaiming the number one spot but the Liverpool goalkeeper was partly at fault for David Luiz’s goal in Chelsea’s 1-1 stalemate at Anfield.

The Brazil international guided a swerving free-kick past an unprepared Mignolet to break the deadlock before Georginio Wijnaldum headed past Thibaut Courtois in the second half.

Mignolet made amends in the final 10 minutes as the Liverpool goalkeeper denied Costa with a superb save.

Speaking to Sky Sports News on Wednesday morning after Liverpool’s 1-1 stalemate with Chelsea, Carragher examined whether the Merseyside outfit should sign a new goalkeeper.

“I think Mignolet has done quite well this season, I think he was unfairly left out for Karius this season. It’s just whether the manager then goes again and buys a goalkeeper, it’s very rare you see a manager buy two goalkeepers in two seasons,” Carragher said.

“It’s a big position to fill, and at times as a manager you’ve got to give the goalkeeper confidence because it’s probably the toughest position to play on the pitch.

“I do think it’s an area Liverpool can improve, it’s nothing new me saying that, but the main man is Jurgen Klopp to decide that.”
