Jamie Carragher tells Jurgen Klopp to consider dropping Emre Can following Liverpool's stuttering form in recent weeks
Jamie Carragher has urged Jurgen Klopp to drop Emre Can following Liverpool’s recent dip in form.
The Reds have endured a stuttering start to the new year under the German coach and slumped to a surprise 2-0 loss to Hull City on Saturday afternoon to leave their top-four hopes in doubt.
Indeed, Liverpool have not yet won a game in 2017 and have been struggling to find consistent form in recent weeks.
Klopp has been tasked with steering the Reds back into the top four this season but it seems that the Merseyside outfit are set to face a fight to qualify for next term’s Champions League.
Carragher feels that Can has been struggling to produce his best displays for Liverpool in midfield and has urged the manager to change his approach.
Speaking to Sky Sports after Saturday’s loss to Hull, Carragher said: “I would take Emre Can out of the midfield. I don’t think it works as a two alongside Jordon Henderson.
“I don’t understand why Georginio Wijnaldum was out of the side. I think he brings more energy and a bigger goal threat.
“Maybe change the system of three central midfielders and three attacking players? You could go for a more conventional two central midfielders, a number 10 and a front three. You would have more attacking players on the pitch against sides like Hull.
“The changes from the bench have got to come a lot quicker too. It takes too long to make a change and they will very rarely make a substitution at half-time.”
Liverpool return to Premier League action with a crunch clash against Tottenham next weekend.
