Jamie Carragher: This Liverpool reject never really convinced me
The Liverpool legend has his say on Mamadou Sakho's Reds career
Jamie Carragher has admitted that he was never really convinced by Mamadou Sakho after the defender completed a move to Crystal Palace on transfer deadline day.
The France international has been out-of-favour at the Anfield outfit since the start of the 2016-17 season after the centre-half was sent home early from their summer tour of USA.
Klopp signed Cameroon international Joel Matip in the summer transfer window on a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 to bolster his defensive options after the Reds finished in eighth place last term.
Sakho was initially signed in a £16m deal from Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain under Jurgen Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers in the 2014 summer transfer window.
Speaking to Liverpool Echo ahead of Sakho’s deadline day move, ex-Reds defender Carragher delivered his blunt verdict on the French defender’s Liverpool career.
“Yes, I think so,” Carragher said.
“He’s come in and I was never quite convinced in him, if I’m totally honest.
“He became a cult hero with the supporters, for one reason or another. He put some great displays in last season, especially in the Europa League.
“Then there was the situation with him missing the (Europa League) final because of the drugs test.
“But I don’t think the manager was ever really convinced. He brought Matip in, and was always going to go with him and Lovren.
“There were obviously a few misdemeanours during pre-season and the manager dealt with it.
“I think it’s best for all parties concerned that he moves on.”
Liverpool signed seven players in the summer transfer window as Klopp looked to bolster his options following an eighth-place finish.
