Jamie Carragher believes that David Luiz’s fine form for Chelsea this season makes him a serious contender for the PFA player of the year award this year.

The defender has been in superb form for Chelsea since his transfer back to the club from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Luiz’s move back to Stamford Bridge to link up with new manager Antonio Conte at Chelsea raised eyebrows last summer.

However, the Brazil international has slotted seamlessly into Chelsea’s 3-4-3 formation has has been one of the west London side’s standout performers this season.

Liverpool legend Carragher feels that Luiz deserves special praise for the way he has matured at Chelsea and is backing the Brazilian to be one of the main contenders for the end of season award.

Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Carragher said: “Why should Luiz not be considered [for the PFA award]?

“He has always looked every inch the modern defender, a big, strong powerhouse who can move.

“He has always had talent but now he has added discipline it is all coming together. He is in the form of his life. For that he can thank Conte.”
