Jamie Redknapp: This player was Liverpool’s unsung hero against Spurs
Jamie Redknapp singles out Lucas Leiva for special praise after Liverpool's 2-0 win over Tottenham on Sunday
Jamie Redknapp believes that Lucas Leiva deserves special praise for his performance for Liverpool in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Tottenham.
Sadio Mane grabbed the headlines as his two quick-fire goals earned the Reds the three points at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp’s men finally notched up their first Premier League win of 2017.
Lucas was deployed at centre-back by Klopp and the Brazilian did not disappoint as he helped to keep the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli at bay on Merseyside.
And Redknapp chose to single out the long-serving Liverpool star for special praise in the wake of the Reds’ victory over the Lilywhites.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “Sadio Mane will win the plaudits for his goals against Tottenham but Lucas deserves a special mention for his performance at centre back.
“I expected him to be in for a torrid afternoon up against Harry Kane and Dele Alli but Lucas kept the in-form Tottenham pair at bay. He defended like a warrior. Lucas may not be the biggest player but he is so wily, knowing when to nudge his opponent and put them off balance.
“The Brazilian has had to suffer plenty of questions about his ability since arriving at Anfield in 2007 but more often than not he is Mr Dependable when called upon — be it in defence or midfield.
“With Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip missing games through injury this season, Lucas is proving that he can still be an important part of Jurgen Klopp’s side.”
Liverpool’s win over Tottenham lifted them back into the top four ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Bournemouth on Monday night.
The Reds are aiming to break back into the top four this season after their eighth-placed finish last term.
