Jamie Redknapp: This star has proved Jose Mourinho wrong at Man United

Jamie Redknapp has been very impressed by Juan Mata's sparkling form for Manchester United in recent weeks

Jamie Redknapp has heaped praise on Juan Mata following his sparkling form for Manchester United this season.

The Spaniard has been in fine form for the Red Devils this term and scored Manchester United’s opening goal in their 2-0 win over Watford at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Mata moved to Manchester United in January 2014 after being deemed to be surplus to requirements at Chelsea by then manager Jose Mourinho.

However, the Portuguese coach has clearly had to change his mind about the playmaker at Old Trafford this season following his sparkling displays for Mourinho’s men.

And Redknapp believes that Mata deserved plenty of praise for his fine form for the Red Devils this season.

Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “Juan Mata must have thought his days were numbered at Old Trafford when Jose Mourinho arrived but I am so impressed with how they have set aside their differences.

“Mourinho let Mata go at Chelsea but the manager has clearly recognised the Spaniard’s qualities.

“Mata’s footballing IQ is off the scale. He does not have the pace to burn past defenders like Anthony Martial so he plays on the right to allow him to find gaps in midfield, cut in on his left foot and shoot.

“I was not blessed with pace so I always liked to cut inside.

“Mata’s superb display against Watford underlined his value to United — though I’m not sure about his goal celebration on Saturday… ”
