Jose Mourinho: This Man United player needs to follow Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s example
The Manchester United manager wants Luke Shaw to follow the example set by Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Jose Mourinho has challenged Luke Shaw to replicate Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s work ethic at Manchester United.
The England defender has found his first-team opportunities limited since Mourinho was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May.
Shaw has made just six starts in the Premier League this term, while the left-back has featured in six games in cup competitions this season.
Mkhitaryan endured a slow start to his Manchester United career after the attacking midfielder moved to Old Trafford in a big-money deal from Borussia Dortmund in July.
However, the playmaker has since forced his way into Mourinho’s plans and has been one of their best players in recent months.
Speaking at his pre-match media conference about Shaw’s current situation at Old Trafford, Mourinho insisted the England international does have attributes that the manager likes.
“Potentially he has many things that I like, but one thing is potentially and another thing is on the pitch to express all the qualities I like a player to express. He has to keep working like Mkhitaryan did for a long time.”
Manchester United are in sixth place in the Premier League table and 11 points adrift of current leaders Chelsea, who the Red Devils will face in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
